Description

description in French  Rich archaeological collections

The museum keeps important collections of prehistoric objects found in the local caves or rock shelters. Except a few pieces dating from the Neolithic era, most of the stored objects belong to the Palaeolithic era, essentially middle and upper Palaeolithic. The items are thousands of remains of fauna, tools and flint frames, objects made of bones or antlers, jewellery and portable artwork engraved on bone material or stones.
An exceptional collection of engraved stones

The flagship of these collections are the engraved stones, especially found in the Magdalenian context of the famous La Marche cave dating back to about 14,000 years and of Les Fadets cave dating back to about 15,000 years or else in the Azilian context of the Bois-Ragot cave in Gouex, dating back to between 13,000 and 10,000 years.

Of all dimensions, they were found in their thousands in the only La Marche cave. Engraved with geometrical patterns, animals, but also and above all with realistic human figurations, these pieces are absolutely exceptional. By their quantity and their quality, these engraved portable artworks are characteristic of the specificity of the prehistoric art of Lussac-les-Châteaux in the Magdalenian era.
