The fortified enclosure of Aigues-Mortes was erected in the 13th Century, upon the initiative of Saint Louis, in order to give the Kingdom of France a port on the Mediterranean. The ramparts extend along 1,634 metres/1 mile flanked by twenty towers and one of the most majestic dungeons of Middle-Age architecture: Constance Tower. This place is sadly famous for having served as a prison for the Cevennes protestants as of 1685.Visit of the monument provides access to the Governor?s abode, in which is shown a film illustrating the major phases in the City?s history. After which, visitors may freely discover the 1,600 metres of ramparts that offer a very varied panorama over the Camargue landscapes. The highlight of the tour will be entering Constance Tower, with its beautiful Gothic architecture, which can be visited freely or with a guide (please enquire at the ticket office of the monument). From the top of the Tower, the viewpoint is simply mind-blowing!
