REMPARTS DE VILLEFRANCHE DE CONFLENT

  Villefranche de Conflent ramparts: one of the Vauban forts listed as World Heritage sites by UNESCO. This fortified town has been exceptionally well preserved, and offers a trip back in time with its panorama of military architecture from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Vauban kept the medieval towers and curtain walls (some parts date back to when the town was founded in the 11th century AD) and further fortified the town, now boasting the ?most beautiful villages of France? label, by surrounding it with bastions.Sheltered by the covered wall-walk there is an exhibition in French and Catalan telling the story of ?Vauban, the man behind the mask?.Also on display ? an 18th century tilt hammer from a Catalan forge.
