CHARTREUSE PONTIFICALE DU VAL DE BENEDICTION

  Today, La Chartreuse, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, a 14th century monastery founded by Pope Innocent VI, and inhabited by Carthusian monks until the 18th century, houses the National Centre for Theatre Writing. This ensemble covers two hectares with both open and enclosed areas: the church and cloister, the cells and medicinal gardens, the wash-house and rose garden, the chapel with frescoes by Matteo Giovanetti, the mausoleum of the founding pope.During the summer months, public and artists come face to face in the restaurant installed in the gardens and on the shady terrace that overlooks the rooftops of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon or around the 18th century fireplace at the winter garden café.
