Inaugurated in 1838, the Granet Museum is one of the most important museums in the region and has the "Musée de France" label. It is an institution of the city of Aix-en-Provence. The museum's modern art collection was considerably enlarged in 2010 when the Jean and Suzanne Planque Foundation deposited the collection of Jean Planque, a Swiss painter and collector who died in 1998, for 15 years. This collection includes some 300 paintings, drawings and sculptures, from the impressionists and post-impressionists Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Redon to the major artists of the 20th century such as Bonnard, Rouault, Picasso, Braque, Dufy, Laurens, Léger, Klee, Bissière, de Staël or Dubuffet... In order to present most of this magnificent collection - nearly 120 works - under the title "Granet XXe, collection Jean Planque", the City of Aix-en-Provence has renovated the chapel of the Pénitents Blancs, a jewel of Aix-en-Provence's 17th century architecture, thus providing the Granet Museum with more than 700 m2 of additional exhibition space.
The Granet Museum is developing a dynamic policy for the public on its two sites, considering that access for all to the arts and culture is a priority.
